Assertiveness — Stand Up for Yourself
Why is it so hard for us to simply ask for what we want? We all have a fear of negative reactions from others, fear of rejection and judgment. For some, this fear is so great that it hinders daily functioning and expression of wishes and attitudes.
Yet, suppressing our desires and needs doesn’t mean we don’t have them. They are there and they try to surface. They push and create pressure, and when we can no longer endure — an explosion comes, either through an outburst or passive aggression.
Through therapeutic work, you can learn to clearly express your views and ask for what you want and what you deserve — whether it’s a raise, a promotion, or standing up to someone who is knowingly or unknowingly bothering you. And to do it all the right way — respecting others while standing up for yourself.
Assertiveness is more than a way of communication — it’s an attitude, a mindset, and it is closely connected to self-confidence. The two feed each other, so let’s start nourishing them together.
Questions & Answers
How do I set boundaries?
Setting boundaries is a difficult process, primarily because the people around you have learned that your limits are weak. Now that you try to set them, they keep pushing through — even the same people who advised you to stand up for yourself. Be prepared for the fact that at first, others will not respect your new boundaries. Try to be consistent, and let your strength lie in persistence rather than heated reactions. When they see that you are serious and not backing down, they will be the ones to back down. This demanding process will be much easier with therapeutic support and guidance.
